Why some dogs refuse food with FortiFlora mixed in
The supplement's flavoring is strong. FortiFlora is heavily seasoned with hydrolyzed pork liver and poultry digest, which most dogs treat as a food upgrade. A minority taste it, recognize that their bowl smells different, and walk away.
Picky eaters and dogs with prior food sensitivities are over-represented in the refusal group. Some breeds (Border Collies, Shelties, certain toy breeds, many sighthounds) are more food-selective generally. A few less common causes worth checking:

Mix the packet thoroughly into the chosen topper, then add it to the regular meal as a small wet portion. The strong flavor of the topper masks the FortiFlora taste.
This works for most dogs the first time.
Fix 2: Give it separately as a treat
Some dogs refuse the entire meal once anything is mixed in. For these dogs, separating the supplement from the regular feeding works better:
- Tear open the packet
- Tip the contents into a small pill pocket, a piece of cheese, or a spoon of peanut butter (xylitol-free)
- Offer it as a treat before or after the regular meal
- Feed the regular meal without anything mixed in
The dog associates the strong flavor with a treat-sized portion, which they may tolerate, rather than the whole dinner.
A small piece of soft food — a half-teaspoon of cream cheese, a bit of cooked chicken — works the same way. The goal is concentration: a small high-value bite carries the supplement without contaminating the whole meal.
Fix 3: Start with a quarter packet
For very picky dogs, the full-packet dose introduced cold often gets refused. A slower introduction helps:
- Days 1-3: Quarter packet mixed into a tablespoon of wet food
- Days 4-6: Half packet
- Days 7-9: Three-quarters packet
- Day 10+: Full packet
This lets the dog habituate to the flavor at lower intensity. Some dogs who refused full packets from day one will accept full packets after a week of slow introduction.

Fix 4: Try a different product
If the three fixes above don't work after 5-7 days of trying, FortiFlora probably isn't the right tool for this dog. The flavor is part of the product — there's no flavor-free version.

- Refusal lasting more than 24 hours

- Puppy under 4 months refusing food for more than 12 hours
Any of these warrants a vet check, not more troubleshooting at home. The supplement question becomes irrelevant when the underlying issue is "my dog isn't eating."
What works for most picky dogs
The single highest-success approach: a small amount of wet food (~1 tablespoon) with FortiFlora mixed thoroughly into it, served alongside the regular dry kibble meal. The wet food makes the supplement palatable; the dry kibble portion remains familiar and uncomplicated.
