Bifidobacterium animalis for dogs

Bifidobacterium animalis is a bacterium that appears without a strain code in four products we track. One dog study exists, but it's observational rather than placebo-controlled: in 42 puppies with diarrhea in their first week of life, a multi-strain probiotic that included B. animalis was linked to improvement in nearly half the puppies within 24 hours and in 83% by 72 hours, with no control group to compare against. Because the product tested was a blend, this result can't be credited to B. animalis specifically.

We don't have a confirmed CFU-per-kg dose number for Bifidobacterium animalis from the canine trials yet -- so this calculator is intentionally disabled rather than guessing.

Common questions

What did the puppy diarrhea study find?

In 42 puppies with diarrhea in their first week, 47.6% improved within 24 hours of the first dose and 83.3% had resolved symptoms by 72 hours. There was no placebo group, so it's an observational result, not a controlled comparison.

Does this study prove B. animalis specifically caused the improvement?

Not on its own — the product tested was a multi-strain probiotic, so the result reflects the blend, not B. animalis in isolation.

What dose was studied?

No specific dose for B. animalis alone is confirmed; the trial tested a multi-strain product rather than isolating this organism's dose.
